Meet me on the Porch!

I truly wish we were sitting on my back porch together! I’d tell you my whole story and listen to yours. Why the porch? My favorite place to be is outside. There’s something magical (Narnia kind of magical) about being outdoors. If I could serve dinner every night on the porch, I would. But, I live in the Lonestar State where it’s too hot for eating outdoors much of the year. I absolutely love to grill, but only if it’s between 45 and 85 degrees—that excludes about five months in Texas. “My family might starve to death if they relied on my cooking. I don’t cook every night anyway—indoors or outdoors!”

I’m crazy about my family! I’m even crazier about the One who gave them to me! I knew I wanted to be a wife, mother, teacher, and difference-maker in the kingdom of God. But as a young believer, my plans didn’t always match God’s plans. The gap between my will and God’s will narrowed within the often messy experiences of singleness, marriage and raising kids. Whether single or married, with or without kids, relationships can be complicated and beautiful, and everything in between.

I value authenticity, so I’m real in my relationships even when it’s hard. I also value truth, so I anchor myself to God’s word. Many years ago, I found myself digging deeper in the Bible. I bought resources. Lots of resources—Bible dictionaries, commentaries, and a lexicon. Soon these study materials, along with books written by my favorite Christian authors, occupied a significant portion of real estate in a tiny space I call my sanctuary— a.k.a. prayer closet.

I dug deeper because I desperately needed God’s truth for my life. I desired to glean exactly what God had for me in his Word. Hours would pass as I discovered the context, the author’s bio, the original Hebrew or Greek words, the geography and more. I searched as though digging for treasure, knowing at best it would make me soul-rich, or at least help me survive. It did both! I’m surviving, some days even thriving, but I certainly cash in the treasure each time I open my Bible.

Praying for years I could attend seminary, in the fall of 2017, “I felt like a six-year-old giddy for her first day of kindergarten as I walkded into my class at Dallas Theological Seminary. I knew my training would not just be for me, but for passing it on to my generation and the next. His Word is life. His Word is truth. His Word is eternal. For every person, tribe, and tongue. And every word matters.

Jesus is still transforming my own words. I pray daily (well almost) that He will “Set a guard over my mouth and keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3). If you and I were sitting together on my back porch, I’d tell you that I need Jesus every day to tame my tongue. I also need his help to not take offense to rough words spoken by others. Words really do have the power of life and death. So my porch prayer for you and for me would be, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight oh Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer” (Psalm 19:14).

Fun facts about me

I have a personal angel in a doggie costume. Charlie loves Jesus. How do I know this? He places his paw on my Bible and listens intently as I read aloud.

If my family can’t find me, the first place they look is my prayer closet. I’m usually writing.

My bathroom cabinet houses a sizeable lip gloss collection because I like all things that glitter and sparkle.

I received the “Flying Camel” award for being scholarly on our recent trip to Israel. (I hope all my seminary professors see this!) I may not have graduated with flying colors, but I certainly earned that flying camel!

My former students called me Queen Lindsey. It must have been the High Tea I served.

I married a funny guy because I love to laugh. And he’s pretty cute too! He says we’ve been happily married for 11 years. In reality, we’ve been married for 26 years. Funny, Joel!

I love camping…well, truthfully…I love glamping…in our Airstream.

Our three children were all born within two years of each other. That means at one point in my parenting adventure, I was mothering three kids two and under!

I’m convinced I’ll be a decorator in heaven. I don’t have time for it now, but you can book me in eternity.
